MICKABOO DECLARES MORATORIUM ON COCKATIEL AND CONURE INTAKES

Due to the substantial increase in the number of birds needing our help, and our severe shortage of foster homes, Mickaboo has had to temporarily cease accepting certain bird species into our organization. We are very sorry to have to announce this moratorium, as we find this situation appalling and it has us very worried. This situation is most likely due to our current economic climate causing more owners to have to surrender their pets, but it also means that we have fewer resources ourselves. We are trying to grow our number of available foster and adoptive homes, but until that happens, our doors will have to remain temporarily closed for the following species: As of Saturday, July 10, 2010, we must begin turning away COCKATIELS in need of homes. As of Monday, July 26, 2010, we must also begin turning away CONURES in need of homes. If you would like to help Mickaboo out, please consider donating to help us pay for medical care for our birds, or become and adoptive or foster parent today!

FOSTER HOMES DESPERATELY NEEDED!!!

Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization based in Northern California. We take in birds that need a safe place to live, rehabilitate them if necessary, and find them good homes. We also try to educate people how to live with companion birds and inform them of the level of care necessary to provide the birds a safe, healthy, permanent home.

Because we have no central facility, no single refuge, we need a foster home for each bird that we take in. And like most animal rescues in the United States, we are being asked to take a growing number of birds, including strays and birds surrendered to animal shelters, birds abandoned in homes due to foreclosure, and birds whose families can no longer care for them due to unforeseen circumstances. In many cases, birds are brought to us because their families cannot pay for desperately-needed veterinary care.

Our supply of foster and adoptive homes has improved a little, but more are needed. The process for becoming a foster home is the same as for being approved as an adoptive home. If you would like to foster birds for Mickaboo and help us work through this difficult time, please attend our next free bird care class. The schedule and locations of classes is on our website here. We need bird-loving people who want to change the world - one bird at a time.

If you are having behavior difficulties with your bird please consider contacting us for assistance or attending our next advanced bird behavior class as an alternative to surrendering your bird. Information on the next classes can be found here.

Featured bird: Shadow & Sunshine
Update 5/28/09: Hi, my name is Shadow, and this pretty girl is Sunshine. We are a very handsome, bonded pair. We were adopted from Mickaboo into a very nice family a couple of years ago, but due to unfortunate circumstances beyond anyone's control, we had to be returned. Right now we are living in a foster home, which is fine, but we would really love to find a permanent home together. We are a little shy, but if one of us ends up on the floor we will readily step up, no problem. And we like other cockatiels too, so no problem if you already have a flock. And did I mention - we really are a handsome pair?!

You can see where I got my name. I'm a subtly colored white-faced pied cockatiel. I'm a pal of Sunshine and we were lucky enough to find a new home thanks to Mickaboo. I'm bot... (read more)
